Please allow me to firstly introduce my background story and then list the
services that I offer as a Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist.
My
association within the Fitness/Sporting Industries started over thirty
years ago when at the age of fifteen, I made the decision to take up the
activity of training with weights in order to gain muscle size and
strength to enhance my capabilities on a football field. From that
point on I have trained with weights (apart from scheduled breaks from
training and during times of injury) at least three times per week, and at
various other periods of intense training up to twice a day six days per
week.
An
injury (torn anterior cruciate ligament) to my left knee in 1978 soon put
an end to any future I may have had on the football field. However, it
allowed me to switch my full time efforts to using weight training towards
a competitive future on stage in the sports of Bodybuilding and
Powerlifting. I have also been fortunate enough to use the basic
principles involved in these activities to allow me to make a living by
instructing both members of the general public and athletes, in the
correct manner and application of using both resistance and endurance
training methods to assist in improving their health and athletic
endeavours.
In
January1985 while working as a Plumber, I encountered a workplace accident
where I fell six metres through the roof of a storage shed. As a result of this
fall, I suffered a fracture dislocation of my lumbar vertebrae which left
me with the condition of "Incomplete Paraplegia". The end result of
this injury is that nowadays I get around by using either crutches or a
wheelchair. After a stay of twenty weeks in hospital, I joined the
"Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Sport and Recreation Association of
Queensland" and pursued the sport of Disabled Powerlifting.
Through this activity, I was fortunate enough to represent Australia five
times as an athlete and once as coach. My best result in this sport
was in winning a World Cup that was held in Northampton England in 1993
and my best lift (bench press) in the sport was 185 kilograms at a
bodyweight of 99 kilograms.
In
January 1986, I took over the ownership of a fitness centre (Spartan Gym)
in Mansfield, Brisbane. I changed the name to "Power &
Fitness Gym" and proceeded to run this business for the next three
and a half years. After I sold the gym I had a well deserved break,
then in 1990 I started up my personal training business (Bodypower
Personal Training) which I still operate today. Over the years, I
took the time and effort to obtain three Diplomas in Fitness, Remedial
Massage and Sports Coaching and become accredited and registered with the
relevant industry bodies in Australia.
Up
to this point in time, through my occupations as a fitness centre
proprietor, personal fitness trainer and remedial massage therapist, I have instructed
and treated well in excess of 3000
clients. These people have come from all walks of life and all
manner of capability (from elite able-bodied athletes to severely disabled
members of the general public) seeking results as varied as losing bodyfat or gaining muscle for everyday health
and wellbeing, increased performance for an athletic event, seeking
increased fitness as a necessary pre-requisite for employment and seeking
massage treatment for relaxation, sports and remedial.
Perhaps
my greatest success story has been my own recent transformation.
Over an eight year period after retiring from competitive powerlifting in
1994, my bodyweight finally peaked at an all time high of 145
kilograms. The chance sighting in a magazine of an advertisement of
a forthcoming bodybuilding competition (the International Natural
Bodybuilding Association's "Natural Olympia" competition in New Zealand)
along with the fact that I was soon to turn forty-four years of age was
all the motivation I needed to once more become a competitive
bodybuilder. I immediately put into practice all of my accumulated
knowledge and experience into twenty months of organised training and
diet.
The
end result was better than I had originally planned for. After
losing 57kilos and getting my bodyweight down to 88 kilos (see
accompanying before and after photos in "gallery") and getting
my body into the best shape it had been in for more than twenty years, I
was successful in winning not only the Wheelchair class of the "Natural
Olympia", but also the same class in the "World Natural Pro/Am" in Melbourne
and the "Natural Universe" in Hollywood.
